The R&D and Innovation Team 

All main business areas of AquaBioTech Group require continuous research and development to advance their innovation potential. The ABT Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) Team is a central corporate unit​ which develops and supports the implementation of internal research projects to progress central goals of the company and improve our product and services offerings.  

Research priorities include strengthening the co-operation between academic and industry research, supporting the aquaculture industry to be more sustainable through technology development, encouraging the combination of aquaculture with other offshore industries​, the development of economically feasible Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), ​and supporting Malta to become a center of aquaculture and Blue Economy knowledge in the Mediterranean​. 

ABT R&D&I projects connect external funding and collaboration opportunities (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), National, bilateral and multilateral calls) with experts from AquaBioTech Group’s ​other teams to progress their specific strategic goals and increase internal capacities through collaboration, networking and knowledge development. 

 

R&D and Innovation Projects 

The R&D&I topics of recent research include projects in Digitalisation & Precision Aquaculture, Valorisation of Aquaculture and Fisheries Waste and Sidestreams, Aquaponics, Marine and Aquatic Ecotoxicology, Environment, Biofouling, and Corrosion, Climate Change and Circular Economy, Multiple use of Marine Space, and African Food Diversity and Production.

Programs Link AquaBioTech Group are actively pursuing partnerships under these calls, particularly under the Cluster 6 program “Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment”.
