Fish Health & Microbiology Internship
Internship Length: Between 3 to 6 months
Start Date: September/October 2024

AquaBioTech Group actively encourages students and post-graduates to undertake training sessions at our company, to gain valuable practical, applied, and hands-on experience. From this internship, the trainee will gain knowledge, understanding and practical experience in techniques and equipment used within microbiological and ecotoxicological laboratories. The intern will also gain insight regarding the processes and procedures led by ABTG and the requirements of laboratory standards.

Overview of associated tasks

The successful candidate will be working with the Aquatic Veterinarians team of the company. The tasks and responsibilities assigned to the intern would include, but will not be limited to:

Key Accountabilities

• Fish biology, physiology and anatomy
• Fish welfare and health/water quality monitoring
• Clinical evaluation of a healthy/disease fish population
• Fish Pathology
• Laboratory technical skills and procedures
• Sampling methods from fish for different laboratory analysis
• Bacterial colonies morphological characterisation
• Analysis, recording and interpretation of laboratory analysis results
• Diagnostic laboratory analysis that can be applied in any animal species and humans How to work with experimental animals

The technician will be supporting the Aquatic Veterinarian with the daily activities within wet and dry laboratories. Diagnostics of fish disease and treatments are the exclusive responsibility of the Aquatic Veterinarian team. The intern will also be involved in performing necropsies and sampling of fish for research studies.

Qualifications & Knowledge

A successful candidate is likely to have a good solid background in biological/medical/biotechnology sciences, veterinarian studies, fish pathology or a related subject, preferably to BSc, although experienced technician candidates and students are also encouraged to apply.
Experience in laboratory operating procedures and GMP and GLP is also a bonus, but not essential as all training in these procedures will be provided.
The chosen intern will also be required to communicate well and clearly in English, both verbally and written.
