Medthink5+5 Seminar

07-Nov-22 - 08-Nov-22

We are glad to inform that we will be attending the Medthink5+5 Seminar, happening in Lisbon, Portugal.

Tapping the potential of Sustainable Blue Economy in the Western Mediterranean: Policies and Practices to Accelerate the Sustainable Transformation.

In the context of the 2022 Spanish co-presidency of the 5+5 Dialogue, the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and the Portuguese Institute of International Relations (IPRI) organise a thematic seminar in the framework of the MedThink 5+5 network

The MedThink 5+5 network of think tanks of the Western Mediterranean provides a multidisciplinary platform of debate linked to the 5+5 Dialogue, which contributes both to strengthening the network and to the regional integration based on a bottom-up approach. Since its inception in May 2016, the MedThink 5+5 network has organised several annual fora and thematic seminars back-to-back with Ministerial Conferences of the 5+5 Dialogue, during which experts from the whole of the region analysed the factors underpinning economic, human, and sustainable development, as well as security and stability in the Western Mediterranean.

This seminar will provide a space to discuss the prospects and challenges of accelerating the transition of the blue economy towards more sustainability while enabling Western Mediterranean countries to fully tap its potential as a driver of economic development and prosperity. Participants from different backgrounds, including decision-makers, scientific experts, representatives of international organisations and civil society from both shores of the Western Mediterranean, will be present.

On the schedule, various topics will be highlighted:

  • Economic models and policies (circular economy, social economy) that accelerate the transformation and development of the blue economy in a sustainable way.
  • Enablers of this transition towards a sustainable blue economy
  • Experiences and best practices regarding policies and practical initiatives (digital transformation, technology transfer, R&I) that foster innovation for new and sustainable business opportunities in the blue economy
  • Capacity building and skills development to harness the full potential of the sustainable blue economy for job creation and inclusive growth with the aim to generate policy recommendations
    stemming from best practices.

Other crucial transversal issues will be addressed, such as investments opportunities and blue finance, ways to increase the participation of women in the different sectors of the blue economy, as well as the role of cooperation in the framework of the 5+5 Dialogue.

Save the dates: from Wednesday 12 to Thursday 13 October.

Location: University of Nova Lisbon, Portugal
