Projects & Milestones – 2025

2025 has been a landmark year for our company, marked by international projects, strategic collaborations, training initiatives and industry recognition. We would like to share some of our key highlights and moments that have shaped our year. We look forward to building on these successes, further developing our future growth, reinforcing our strategic positioning and expanding our impact across the blue economy in 2026.

Aquaculture & Aquaponics Training (South Africa)

At the beginning of 2025, we delivered hands-on aquaculture and aquaponics training in partnership with Afraponix in South Africa. The project was supporting capacity building and knowledge transfer for sustainable food production systems. Find more information in this post. 

Foodland Project – Closing Meeting (Morocco)

In February 2025, we participated in the final closing meeting of the Foodland project in Morocco, concluding project activities and reviewing final results, lessons learned and long-term impacts.

RootLinks Project – Kick-off Meeting (Berlin, Germany) & Partners Conference (Warsaw)

The official kick-off meeting of our RootLinks project took place in Berlin in early 2025. This project is an initiative empowering primary producers in agriculture, forestry, and the blue economy by connecting them across Europe and reinforcing their vital role in circular bio-based economy value chains. Our RDI Project Coordinator, Stela Karovic represented the company, with the meeting setting the framework for collaboration, work packages and project implementation. This project will last until 2029.

Additionally in June 2025, we travelled to Warsaw to attend a RootLinks partners conference, focusing on progress review, coordination among partners and upcoming project activities.

Seafood Expo Global – (Barcelona)

Our Business Development Director, George D. Mantas attended Seafood Expo Global 2025 in Barcelona, the world’s largest seafood trade event. The fair provided valuable opportunities to meet international stakeholders, explore market trends, and strengthen existing professional relationships. We were also pleased to raise awareness of one of our European Funded project, FishEUTrust with stakeholders and attendees.

European Maritime Day (Cork, Ireland)

Our Business Development Director represented the company at European Maritime Day 2025 in Cork, Ireland, engaging with policymakers, researchers and industry leaders active in the European blue economy. It was a fruitful engagement with the Irish sector leading to better understanding of the country’s needs and visions for the future.

Cipromed Project Meeting (Cyprus)

A Cipromed project meeting was held in Cyprus in 2025, with two colleagues from the RDI department attending. Cipromed aims to apply, validate and scale up an integrated array of processes, recovering a significant amount of proteins from agro-industrial side-streams, protein fractions of insects, microalgae and legume biomass. This project aims to reduce the risk for the Mediterranean countries of being dependent on imported protein sources and increase the stability and resilience of agri-food production systems The meeting supported ongoing cooperation and alignment on research and innovation activities.

BCTHubs Stakeholder Meeting (Thessaloniki, Greece)

As part of the BCTHubs initiative, we attended a stakeholder meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece, strengthening collaboration with Mediterranean blue-economy regional stakeholders.  BCTHubs is a novel project looking to protect and monetise the marine cultural heritage with ABTG providing business support for new and emerging markets of commercialisation.

Pharm-ERA Summer School – Marine & Ocean Life (Malta)

During June 2025, we hosted a Pharm-ERA summer school at our facilities, welcoming students for training activities focused on marine ecosystems, aquaculture and ocean life. ActFast Project – Kick-off Meeting (Bologna, Italy)

The ActFast project officially started with its kick-off meeting in Bologna, Italy, attended by our RDI Director. The consortium aligned on technical objectives, timelines and expected outputs. ActFast will promote the development of fast and replicable climate solutions for marine, transitional, and freshwater aquaculture by integrating climate prediction models with targeted solutions in four target regions. AquaBioTech’s role in this project will be to conduct live trials in our ABTG Innovia facilities providing valuable data to our research partners.

 

2025 Exhibitions & Trade fairs

As part of our continued business engagement activities we were delighted to exhibit at two key aquaculture trade shows in Norway and Spain. We exhibited at Aqua Nor 2025, Norway’s largest and one of the world’s most important aquaculture trade fairs. Our stand served as a meeting point for partners, clients and technology providers.

We participated as exhibitors at Aquaculture Europe 2025 in Valencia, connecting with industry professionals, researchers and partners. The event supported strategic networking and collaboration across the European aquaculture sector.

The events held several thousands of visitors as well as more than 500 exhibitors combined.

Algae Aquaculture Workshop (Romania)

We were delighted to have AquaBioTech Group’s Head of Research and Development Department Simona Paolacci attended a workshop organised by EX-AQUA “𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘈𝘭𝘨𝘢𝘦 𝘈𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦: 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘚𝘦𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯”, in Costanta, Romania. Many seaweed experts from different European countries, including Dr Paolacci,  shared their experience with algae farming in the effort to support BlackSea researchers and entrepreneurs to develop this sector in the region

 

Malta Business Awards 2025 – Best SME (Second Place)

In 2025, we were awarded second place in the “Best SME” category at the Malta Business Awards. This recognition highlights our performance, growth and contribution to innovation and sustainability within Malta’s business ecosystem.

Ecolution Project – Workshop (Prague)

As part of the Ecolution project, our RDI Project Coordinator, Stela Karovic, travelled to Prague, Czech Republic, for an in-person ECOLUTION project meeting. The team spent a day and a half discussing project activities and preparing to launch the first semester of the master’s course. The consortia are currently looking for ways to sustain this initiative going forward.

WestMED Conference (Tunis, Tunisia)

At the end of November 2025, our RDI Coordinator attended the WestMED Conference in Tunis. During the event, we were delighted to be presented with “Best Project” for BCTHubs, recognising its impact on sustainable blue-economy development and regional cooperation.
