Immediate Vacancy: Marine Biologist / Scientist

The company is seeking another capable Marine Scientist / Biologist to join our rapidly expanding team. The role includes the oversight of marine biological activities in the company, the coordination and reporting of various project developments, as well as being directly involved at a practical level in all field surveys. Experience in the design, management and execution of marine related projects is essential. The candidate must be fluent in written and spoken English and ideally at least one other language. 

Synopsis of position offered

A position has arisen for a suitably qualified person to work on a variety of projects within the Group’s diverse portfolio as a Marine Biologist / Scientist.

The responsibilities of the selected candidate include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct inventories, testing and monitoring of marine life exposed to pollutants.
  • Collect and analyse samples, and develop new theories based on this research.
  • Conduct environmental impact assessments that evaluate possible environmental impacts of proposed projects or developments. SCUBA dive to survey endangered organisms and implementing preservation strategies.
  • Engage in coring techniques, geographic information systems (GIS), visual recording and sampling to determine the health of the marine environment.
  • Prepare detailed reports for agencies, funders, commercial organisations, government organisations or other commercial companies that make use of the sea / seabed.
  • Coordinate and track assignments, schedules and budgets.
  • Provide policymakers with the scientific information needed to best manage the marine environment and advocate this in the policy process through government liaison, press and media.
  • Communicate the latest findings on marine biology through academic publications, conferences or outreach.

Reporting to the head of department, the position is demanding, requiring a person who is highly motivated and self-organised. The selected person must be prepared to work to very tight deadlines in isolated and multi-functional projects and in conjunction with a team of international staff based at our head-office in Malta.

Experience and Qualifications Overview

The ideal candidate will have a strong balance between academic qualifications and practical experience in all areas of the subject, including preparing tenders, scientific reports, and other assessments as necessary.

  • B.Sc (Hons) in marine biology / marine science or similar is essential, an M.Sc. would be preferred, with at least two (2) years of commercial experience in a marine science environment.
  • Ability to plan and execute experimental protocols; excellent laboratory skills, such as sequencing, writing risk assessments and standard operating procedures. Excellent knowledge of microscopes, electronic equipment, dissection, collection and preservation of biological and chemical samples.
  • Although not the norm, we require staff to be adaptable to living in basic living conditions in minimalist environments, to work in all types of weather and live aboard research vessels for short periods of time
  • Superb interpersonal skills to work with a variety of people from local fisherman and government officials to activists and professors.
  • Practical experience in SCUBA diving, boat handling (ideally, but not essential) and first aid.
  • Analytical thinker with strong conceptual and research skills; strong numeracy and IT skills with accuracy and attention to detail and the willingness to keep up to date with current marine information and research.

The selected candidate must possess a clean EU / EEA / UK passport with no travel restrictions or legal convictions, be an excellent communicator, be flexible and able to work under pressure. Applicants can expect to have the opportunities to travel at short notice as part of international assignments the company is awarded.

Financial Package

The successful candidate will be offered a long-term, fixed-term contract with the company. The starting package offered for this position will be structured largely upon the chosen candidate, reflecting the experience the candidate brings to the company, but also in line with the cost of living in Malta and could include an accommodation package, if required.
